Kipchumba Murkomen, the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior Ministry, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, insinuated that he is ready to lose allies in his push to end the politics of goons.

Speaking during Jukwaa La Usalama, Siaya chapter, the tough-speaking CS regretted that politicians, instead of being role models by delivering on their mandate, had resorted to misusing jobless youths.

He said that in the coming months, many will be arrested and that there will be no discrimination based on which political camp one belongs to.

Murkomen revealed that intelligence reports have linked both county and national leaders to groups of organised gangs that have been hired to cause chaos ahead of the upcoming by-elections.

The CS insisted that the government has mapped hotspots of political violence and is prepared to move in and neutralise them before the November 27 polls.

Murkomen’s warning

The Interior CS pointed fingers at Members of Parliament, MCAs and even governors, accusing them of financing gangs.

He noted that the situation had spiralled to the point where single ward leaders were now controlling groups of up to 100 goons, while MPs and senior county bosses commanded hundreds or even thousands.

“Within the next month, we need to see most of these gang leaders, gangs, and goons facing the full force of the law,” Murkomen noted.

Murkomen stressed that the government would not just target the goons themselves, but also those bankrolling them behind the scenes.

“And for anyone who is maintaining and paying young people to commit criminal offences and cause disturbances and assaults, we are not just coming for the gang leaders and gangs, we are also coming for you,” he added.

IEBC sets election timelines

Murkomen’s remarks come as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) finalises preparations for the nationwide by-elections slated for November 27.

Over 20 seats are expected to be contested across the country, ranging from ward to constituency to senatorial positions.

Political parties seeking to participate in the mini-polls were directed to submit the names and specimen signatures of their authorised representatives by Wednesday, September 17.
