Manyatta Member of Parliament (MP) Gitonga Mukunji has sensationally claimed that there was a plot to eliminate him while in police custody, saying he narrowly escaped death through divine intervention.

Speaking during a bursary distribution ceremony at the University of Embu grounds on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Mukunji told residents that powerful forces had directed that he should not leave the cells alive.

He alleged that the plan was to either shoot him dead or burn him alive inside the police station where he was detained.

“I am alive today because of God. When I was arrested, the directive was that I be shot or the police station where I was locked be set ablaze, and later it be reported that my car was carrying weapons. But God, through well-wishers, intervened, and my life was spared,” Mukunji told the crowd.

The MP further claimed that some of his close allies were arrested and pressured to implicate him with false accusations but declined despite being offered money.

“Some of the young people who were arrested were told to set me up, but they said they could not. That is how God used them to protect me,” he added.

Mukunji alleged that some officers guarding him were under strict instructions to ensure he did not survive, but a few of them defied the orders.

“The police guarding me were pressured to finish me, but some officers came and told me they love me. After my phones were confiscated, they reported I had been arrested, and that is how my family learned of my whereabouts,” he revealed.

He recounted being first held in Nairobi before being locked up at Kibii Police Station, then transferred to Muthaiga and later Kahawa Law Courts, where he faced terrorism-related charges. However, the case collapsed for lack of evidence, leading to his release.

Despite the ordeal, the youthful legislator vowed to remain firm in his political stand. “I will not be cowed by political intimidation or persecution. I will stand firm with the wishes of the people at all times,” he declared.
