Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji arrested
The National Police Service (NPS) has officially confirmed the arrest of Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 7, 2025, the NPS listed the MP among individuals apprehended during the Sabasaba protests.
According to the NPS, Mukunji was arrested alongside several others in connection with acts of lawlessness reported during the demonstrations. The police indicated that those arrested will be subjected to investigations in line with the law.

“Additionally, a number of suspects have been arrested, including Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, MP for Manyatta Constituency,” NPS said.
The NPS further provided an update on the Saba Saba protests, acknowledging that while the majority of Kenyans conducted themselves peacefully, a number of individuals engaged in criminal acts. These included attacks on law enforcement officers, looting, and destruction of property.
“The National Police Service (NPS) wishes to update the public following today’s protests, dubbed ‘Sabasaba’. NPS commends the majority of Kenyans for being law-abiding and heeding the call to maintain law and order.” They added
Outcome of the protests
In its report, the NPS recorded 11 fatalities, 52 police officers injured, and 11 civilians injured. The protests also resulted in the damage of 12 police vehicles, 3 government vehicles, and 4 civilian vehicles. A total of 567 arrests were made.

The NPS commended its officers for maintaining professionalism under difficult circumstances and affirmed its commitment to investigating all incidents thoroughly. The service also urged members of the public to provide any information that could assist in identifying individuals who participated in criminal activities but are yet to be arrested.
“The NPS also commends its officers for demonstrating exceptional restraint and professionalism in the face of sustained violence and provocation by criminals who infiltrated the protests and encourages anyone with information about individuals involved in criminal activities who are still at large to come forward and share that information or report to the nearest police station,” they concluded.
