Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has taken a swipe at the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for exporting tribalism in the diaspora in his ongoing two-month tour of the state.

Speaking in Kajiado County on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Mudavadi faulted the Democracy for Citizens Party leader for electing to speak in his local dialect to the Kenyan community abroad.

“A person who has been a DP in this country, when you say you want to address people living in the diaspora in your local dialect, then you are exporting tribalism,” he stated.

The former VP asserted that Kenyans in the diaspora have always been united.

“The bad manners you have here, you are exporting it to the diaspora. Kenyans in the diaspora have been united. When you are in a foreign land, the best neighbour is the Kenyan you know, and you don’t look at his tribe. They know how to unite and support each other even when there is a problem,” he stated.

His sentiments come after National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang’ula also spoke on Gachagua’s tour of the US, where the politician sought to engage with the diaspora community.

Speaking on Friday, July 18, 2025, in Busia County, Wetang’ula urged Kenyans living abroad to rise above tribal divisions, warning against the growing trend of exporting ethnic politics to the diaspora.

“Do not take tribalism to the diaspora; you cannot go abroad and just talk to one tribe,” Wetang’ula said, adding that Kenya’s international image is at stake if political leaders encourage exclusivity based on ethnicity.

The foregoing comes as Gachagua continues the tour meant to consolidate support among Kenyans living abroad ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The former DP touched down at Logan International Airport on Thursday, July 17, 2025, where he was welcomed by members of the Kenyan community, led by diaspora chairman David Gikonyo.

His Boston tour was preceded by a visit to Seattle, Washington, where he met members of several Kenyan communities and launched a satellite office for his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

Diaspora voices

Gachagua’s remarks during the tour have focused on listening to the concerns of Kenyans abroad and strengthening their involvement in national matters.

“I am glad that they understand the challenges our country is undergoing and their commitment to supporting positive change,” Gachagua said during a meeting with the Abagusii community in Seattle on July 15.
