A Kisumu mother who survived the grisly Kisumu-Kakamega highway accident that killed at least 26 people has revealed why she has renamed her seven-month-old son “Miracle.”

Vicklyne Adongo, who was travelling with her infant when the bus carrying 61 family members overturned near the Coptic roundabout on August 8, 2025, says the survival of her baby is nothing short of divine intervention.

Speaking after the tragedy, Adongo said she could not attend the burials of the other victims because she was still processing her own survival and that of her child.

“I did not attend the funerals of the other victims myself because I was not feeling well, and I was still processing the accident. But they were buried properly,” she narrated.

The emotional mother described her joy at seeing her son alive, admitting she could not imagine how life would have been had she lost him as a baby in the horrific crash.

“As a mother, I am very happy to see my baby alive. I kept thinking, if my child had died, what would I have done? I would have felt terrible. Imagine losing a child on the road and returning home alive. Also, if I had died in that accident and my baby survived, it would have been painful. This is truly God’s plan,” she said.

Adongo revealed that from the very day of the accident, she has been calling his son “Miracle”, and the name has now stuck.

She added that naming her son Miracle was a way to constantly remind herself and her family of the divine protection that spared the infant during the horrifying accident.

“From the day of the accident, I had been calling him Reno, but now I call him Miracle. Even my other children call him Miracle. Even in the morning, when I wake up to breastfeed, I just call him Miracle. That is his name now, and I am used to it. I cannot change it anymore. I have decided to call him Innocent Miracle. Even if people come to ask, they will find the baby’s name is Miracle. I see no need for his old name; this is God’s plan,” she narrated.

The tragic accident has left deep scars in Kisumu and beyond.

According to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), 21 people died at the facility while 21 others were admitted with serious injuries after the bus ferrying mourners overturned.

The bus, which was returning from a burial in Nyahera, Kisumu West sub-county, was packed with family members heading to Nyakach.

At least 19 bodies were brought in directly from the accident scene, while two men and a child succumbed upon arrival at JOOTRH.

By the following week, the death toll had risen to 26, with 22 of the victims already laid to rest in emotional ceremonies across the region.
