Kisumu West MP: Charles Ong’ondo knew who his killers were
Kisumu West Member of Parliament (MP) Rozaa Buyu has stated that Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo knew who his killers were but chose not to say.
Speaking in Kasipul Kabondo Kachien village in Homabay County during the burial of the late MP, Buyu expressed optimism that soon Kenyans will know who the killers were.
“Today, if Sir Charles Ong’ondo Were opened his eyes, without fear of contradiction, the one thing Charles would say is, “I told you they wanted to kill me; you never believed me”,” she lamented.
“Charles knew who they were but never told us who they were and we just hope that in time we will know who they were.”
While eulogising the late MP, she remembered him for his virtue of loyalty to his political party, family and friends.
“Charles’ greatest virtue was the virtue of loyalty. He was loyal to his party leader, Raila Odinga, party, constituents and friends,” she added.
Ong’ondo’s death
He was shot dead on Wednesday night, April 30, 2025, in a suspected targeted assassination near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator was ambushed by two gunmen riding on a motorcycle, according to witness accounts.
According to police, the attackers had been trailing his vehicle before one of them disembarked and fired multiple shots at close range, fatally wounding the MP.
His driver, who was with him during the attack, survived, leading investigators to believe the gunmen were specifically targeting the lawmaker.
The incident was also witnessed by traffic police officers at the roundabout.
The MP was rushed to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Government Chief Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor confirmed that the late MP met his death due to extensive internal injuries inflicted by multiple gunshot wounds.
Speaking to the press after conducting a detailed autopsy at Lee Funeral Home, Dr. Oduor revealed that the MP was shot five times, with the bullets penetrating vital internal organs.
“The nature and extent of the injuries made survival impossible,” Dr. Oduor stated.
He was serving his second term as MP for Kasipul constituency in Homa Bay County, having been first elected in 2017 on an ODM ticket.
A respected educationist before joining politics, he previously worked with the Ministry of Education and was a strong advocate for reforms in Kenya’s public education system.
ODM officials and fellow legislators expressed shock and outrage at the killing, calling for swift investigations and justice.
