Nairobi County’s Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has vowed tough action against anyone who vandalises public property, following an incident where a newly installed dustbin in the Central Business District (CBD) was destroyed.

The vandalism took place on the night of Monday, June 2, 2025.

According to a statement posted by Mosiria on his official X account on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, a young man was caught in the act of destroying one of the new dustbins. Concerned citizens at the scene quickly alerted authorities, who responded immediately.

Mosiria said the suspect was arrested and is expected to be taken to court. The Environment Chief Officer thanked the members of the public who took quick action and called on residents to continue being watchful and protective of public amenities.

“Last night, I was called to the scene where a young man had vandalised one of our newly installed dustbins in the CBD. Together with our County Environment Officers, we swiftly responded and arrested the suspect, who was caught in the act by vigilant and responsible citizens. He is now set to be arraigned in court,” Mosiria stated.

He emphasised the county government’s commitment to environmental conservation. He explained that the installation of the dustbins is part of a larger plan to make Nairobi cleaner, more organised, and environmentally friendly. He also highlighted the importance of protecting public property for both current and future generations.

“The installation of these dustbins across the city is part of our ongoing efforts to maintain a clean, organized, and sustainable Nairobi. These public utilities are vital, and we must ensure they are protected for both current and future generations,” he added.

The incident comes just two weeks after the Nairobi County Government launched the installation of new, large-capacity dustbins across the CBD. The rollout began on May 20, 2025, as part of a citywide cleanup and beautification initiative.

Green Nairobi County Executive Committee (CEC) Member Maureen Njeri confirmed the dustbin installation project. She said it followed a well-coordinated cleanup exercise led by the Green Army teams under the Green Nairobi Department.

The new dustbins are large black containers made of durable glass fibre and decorated with county colours. They are branded with the message “Let’s Make Nairobi Clean” and have been placed along key streets and highways in the city centre.

Njeri explained that this effort is part of a broader county plan to set up Green Nairobi Limited, a company that will focus on sanitation, garbage collection, and environmental sustainability. She expressed confidence that the plan would succeed and called on Nairobians to support the campaign.

‘This plan must succeed. I’ve said it before, we can have a clean city,” she affirmed. “With proper coordination, Green Nairobi will oversee cleanups, manage garbage collection, create jobs, and help us realise the city we all want to live and work in,” she said.

She stressed the importance of having a clean city and noted that the Green Nairobi initiative would create jobs while improving living and working conditions for residents.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja urged the public to support the initiative by using the dustbins properly and maintaining cleanliness in public spaces.
