City Hall speaks out after Nairobians notice new generation dustbins across CBD

The Nairobi County Government has broken its silence following a wave of online chatter stirred up by keen-eyed residents who spotted a series of sleek, new-generation dustbins installed across the city’s Central Business District (CBD).
In a statement on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, City Hall explained that it launched the installation of large, user-friendly, and visually appealing dustbins across the CBD in an effort to mark its renewed commitment to keeping the capital city clean.
Nairobi County’s Environment Executive, Maureen Njeri, said the rollout of a new initiative follows a well-coordinated clean-up drive spearheaded by the Green Army, the workforce under the Green Nairobi Department.

“Maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility. While the Green Army continues their impressive work, each of us must do our part by refraining from littering,” Njeri emphasised.
The project is being launched in CBD as the first phase, with plans underway to expand into residential areas.
Stylish black waste bins, branded with the message ‘Let’s Make Nairobi Clean’ and adorned in county colours, have already been installed along key roads and avenues in the city centre.

According to Njeri, the waste management programme forms part of a broader strategy that includes the establishment of Green Nairobi Limited—a county-owned agency dedicated to improving environmental health and promoting sustainable urban living.
“We must make this work. A clean Nairobi is achievable. With good planning and teamwork, Green Nairobi will take the lead in clean-up operations, oversee garbage collection, create job opportunities, and help us build the kind of city we all deserve,” she declared.

Several installation teams have been deployed across designated locations, and the bin rollout will continue in the coming weeks.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has rallied residents to embrace the campaign and take ownership of a cleaner capital.
“We urge every Nairobi resident to support this initiative by using the bins and respecting our shared environment. Together with the Green Army, we can transform our city into a cleaner, greener space,” Njeri added.

She further revealed that the newly introduced bins are made from glass fibre, a material selected for its durability and resistance to vandalism.
In addition, Nairobi County has signed a waste-to-energy deal to convert garbage from the Dandora dumpsite into renewable energy. The county also plans to crack down on illegal dumping, with stiff penalties lined up for offenders to strengthen the campaign’s impact.
