Lights off. Phone on silent. Movie playing. Snacks within reach. Sometimes, that is all the entertainment you need. A solo movie night at home is your chance to eat without sharing, pause the film whenever you want and enjoy your favourite comfort foods without anyone judging your choices.

The secret is choosing food that is tasty, easy to eat and filling enough to keep you away from the kitchen once the movie starts. Here are five foods that can turn an ordinary night indoors into a little personal treat.

Popcorn for the classic movie mood

Popcorn and movies are practically inseparable. There is something about holding a warm bowl of freshly popped corn while watching a film that makes the whole experience feel more complete.

You can keep it simple with butter and salt or get creative with chilli, paprika, cheese seasoning or a little caramel. If you prefer sweet popcorn, add some chocolate pieces or crushed biscuits for an extra treat.

Popcorn is also useful when you are not particularly hungry but still want something to munch on. It gives your hands something to do during those long conversations in the movie when absolutely nothing is exploding.

Just make enough. There is no greater betrayal than reaching into the bowl halfway through the film and finding three lonely kernels staring back at you.

Pizza when you want something filling

Pizza is the friend that never asks too many questions. When you are tired, hungry and completely uninterested in cooking, it is one of the easiest choices for a movie night.

You can order your favourite pizza or make a simple homemade version using whatever you have available. Cheese, chicken, beef, vegetables or a little chilli can turn it into exactly what you want.

The best thing about having pizza alone is that there is no debate over toppings. You do not have to negotiate with someone who thinks pineapple belongs on pizza or someone who believes extra onions are a personality trait.

A few slices can keep you satisfied through the movie, while any leftovers can become tomorrow’s lunch.

Chicken wings for something messy and delicious

Chicken wings are another excellent choice when you want your movie night to feel slightly more indulgent. Crispy on the outside, juicy inside and covered in a spicy or sticky sauce, they are difficult to resist.

You can prepare them at home or order them from your favourite takeaway spot. Try barbecue, garlic, chilli or a combination of flavours if you are feeling adventurous.

Keep plenty of tissues nearby, though. Wings are not particularly interested in preserving your dignity. Sauce will find your fingers, your phone and possibly the remote before the night is over.

For an even better meal, add some fries or a simple salad on the side.

Nachos for a crunchy treat

Nachos are perfect when you want something that sits somewhere between a snack and a proper meal. They are crunchy, salty and easy to customise depending on your mood.

Start with tortilla chips and add melted cheese, tomatoes, onions, peppers, beans, shredded chicken or minced meat. Add salsa, guacamole or sour cream if you have them.

Making nachos at home also means you can build the perfect portion without worrying about somebody stealing the best pieces. Load your side with extra cheese. Leave out the onions. Add as much chilli as you can handle.

This is one of those meals where there are no rules because nobody is watching.

Ice cream for the sweet ending

A movie night without dessert can feel like a story that ended halfway through. Ice cream is an easy way to give the evening a sweet finish without spending another hour in the kitchen.

Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cookies and cream or whatever flavour currently has your attention will do the job. You can eat it straight from the tub if you are alone, although putting it into a bowl might make you feel slightly more responsible.

For something extra special, add chopped fruit, chocolate sauce, crushed biscuits or nuts. You can even make a small sundae and pretend you are at a fancy restaurant.
