President William Ruto’s Senior Advisor in the Council of Economic Advisors, Moses Kuria, has lauded businesspeople in Githurai and Thika Town for securing their properties ahead of the anticipated Saba Saba commemoration demonstrations.

This is in response to the massive destruction of property witnessed during the June 25, 2025, protests that saw many businesses and people lose their investments to goons who infiltrated the demonstrations.

In a statement on Monday, July 7, 2025, Kuria stated that he is satisfied with the heightened security measures implemented by the businesspeople to protect their businesses.

“Big up Githurai Business Community. I am satisfied with the presidential-level security measures you have put in place to protect your families and businesses. Stand Your Ground. You are on your own,” he stated.

“Well done, Thika Town. A good organisation to protect your businesses. Stand Your Guard. This is civil war,” he added.

These traders join others in major cities, such as businesswoman Shiquo wa Hii Style in Nairobi, who has relocated stock from three of her outlets in the Central Business District (CBD) as a precautionary measure.

Speaking as she moved some of the products on the night of Sunday, July 6, 2025, the businesswoman expressed fears at the thought of goons and looters taking advantage of the protests to attack businesses in the city centre.

“As investors, we are securing our goods because we do not have an option. Investors are not safe, especially us, so we are moving everything from the RNG plaza, from Beaver House, and from Superior,” Shiquo stated.

She revealed that the shops would be open on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, if everything had settled down by then, painting a grim picture of the uncertainty that businesses in urban areas face when protests occur.

On July 7, 1990, nationwide protests erupted to demand the reintroduction of a multi-party political system, in opposition to the authoritarian one-party rule of President Daniel arap Moi.

Despite a government ban and the arrest of key pro-democracy figures like Kenneth Matiba and Charles Rubia, thousands defied the crackdown, leading to violent confrontations with police that resulted in numerous deaths, injuries, and detentions, ultimately forcing the repeal of Section 2A of the Constitution in 1991 and paving the way for democratic reforms.
