Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo on Friday called out Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko over his utterances at the memorial service of the Late Kibra MP, Ken Okoth, on Thursday.
Speaking at Moi Girls’ High School in Nairobi, Sonko told mourners that Okoth had a secret lover, whom he got a son with in 2016.
“The Late Ken Okoth has a child named Okoth with one Anita, who is a nominated MCA in the County Assembly of Nairobi. Let us not lie to ourselves,” said Sonko, adding: “It is not wrong to have more than one wife. Recently, President Kenyatta signed into law a bill allowing polygamy.”
Sonko went ahead to reveal that Anita, 31, and Okoth met and fell in love in 2013.
The city governor further claimed that Okoth implored upon him to nominate Anita, whose real name is Anne Muthoni Thumbi, to the Nairobi County Assembly shortly after he won the race for Nairobi governor in the August 8, 2017 general election.
As Sonko made the allegations, Okoth’s wife, Monica, was watching in disbelief from her seat.
And now, Millie Odhiambo has come out to fault the county boss.
Millie’s disappointment, which she aired on Facebook, comes just a day after Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja blasted Sonko over his remarks at Okoth’s memorial service.
“There are people who still think intellectually and [are] not swayed by populist sentiments. Under the Constitution, all children are recognised including those born out of wedlock. The law of succession allows any seed of Ken to inherit. The idea here is to pitch for purposes of inheritance. Someone tell her the child is safe. You did not need to embarrass the wife and family,” said Millie Odhiambo on her official Facebook page on Friday.
“#SupportMonicaOkoth. Widowed in a foreign land, and then some shameful governor bloviates! Verbal Diarrhea. (Wear her shoes for just one second)! This woman had stood and supported Ken throughout his ailment. Where were the body-claimers then? He even acknowledged her, not ‘them’.
“Just because he did the through pass, a former team of his, rug tag outfit, (Rescue whatever) nominated her to the Assembly. That does not give him any right to embarrass Monica without much thought on national TV and audience.
“The issue, and respect for both the Late and the widow, would deserve much better handling. How Sonko behaved must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. Then, after all that, they still put an injunction [against Ken’s cremation]?
“Didn’t they know they could have just done that quietly without taking the focus away from the bereaved?
“Fact of the matter is: Sonko had not an iota of respect for Ken in his defenseless moment in death, he chose to go for the weakest link. How do you embarrass one woman to please the other?
“Look, he [Ken] promised to educate the child. The mom is an MCA. So, it’s not like the child is actually in a disadvantaged state. Was the lady in [a] legal marriage to Okoth, or just sired a child together? Still, no justification for what he [Sonko] did. Never will be.
“Well, he chose the soft one. There are families, I know he couldn’t have done that to. [I] hope, he has woken up to two set of balls, a total hero indeed! To the ‘cheering’ crowd, I have no words, but pathetic is a trial.
“Monica Okoth, I am sorry you had to go through this, very sorry. I felt the pain with you. Keep your head high. You [have] come far with Ken; 21 years is no joke. You said you will keep his legacy alive, I say: go for it. Vie for that seat already. I know you can!”
-DNA-
A Nairobi court on Friday, August 2, directed that DNA samples of the Late Ken Okoth be collected and matched against Anita’s son to ascertain if Okoth is indeed the biological father of the 3-year-old.
Anita wants her son listed among the key beneficiaries of Okoth’s property.
