Miano launches Astro-Tourism after rare Blood Moon in Samburu

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has launched Astro Tourism in Samburu County, where Kenyans witnessed one of the clearest views of the blood moon and Saturn alignment.
In a statement shared by the Kenya Tourism Board on Sunday, September 7, 2025, the ministry noted that the initiative is part of efforts to diversify the country’s tourism products.
The government hopes that Astro Tourism will diversify Kenya’s tourism portfolio beyond wildlife safaris and coastal attractions. The ministry said it is expected to attract both local and international travellers, while also boosting community involvement, cultural storytelling, and conservation efforts tied to the protection of natural skies.
“Kenya is on 7th hosted the first dedicated Astro Tourism experience in Samburu County as part of the initiative to diversify tourism offerings and position Kenya as a leading destination for astronomy enthusiasts and adventure travellers. Astro Tourism is an emerging niche market that combines stargazing, astronomy education, and the experience of pristine night skies. With minimal light pollution, clear equatorial skies, and unique landscapes, Samburu presents an unparalleled opportunity to showcase Kenya’s celestial wonders,” the statement read in part.

Miano said the region’s pristine skies, free from light pollution, make it one of the best places in the world for stargazing.
Speaking during the launch, CS Miano said the event was more than just a celebration of a rare lunar eclipse.
“Tonight, we are not just witnessing a total lunar eclipse but embarking on a new journey, illuminating a path to a future where our tourism sector shines brighter than ever before. Not just a ‘blood moon’ moment but a dawn in our tourism sector,” she stated.

Why Samburu?
Samburu was singled out as one of the most ideal locations to experience the celestial event.
“Tonight, Kenya witnesses a rare celestial spectacle a blood moon and Saturn alignment lighting up our skies. Why Samburu? It is one of the best places on earth to look up,” the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) observed.
The agency also emphasised that Kenya’s landscapes beyond wildlife safaris are valuable assets for astronomy tourism.
“From Taita Hills to Mt. Kenya, to our beaches and Samburu, Kenya’s wild spaces are not just home to incredible wildlife, but also gateways to the stars,” KWS stated.
The blood moon and Saturn alignment were visible across Kenya from 8:30 pm until the early hours of September 8.
A blood moon occurs when sunlight refracts through the Earth’s atmosphere during a lunar eclipse, casting a reddish glow on the moon. However, Samburu’s remote location, dark skies, and clear equatorial atmosphere offered one of the most breathtaking views.
