The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has declared that the Wantam movement is now a national force, transcending regional and ethnic boundaries.

Speaking to a local TV station on Sunday, October 12, 2025, Karua insisted that Wantam has gained support even in President William Ruto’s backyard of Sugoi, dismissing claims that the movement is only being embraced in Central Kenya.

Karua, who is positioning herself as a reformist candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election, said President Ruto’s allies have been peddling falsehoods to undermine the movement’s growing influence.

She maintained that Wantam represents the voice of ordinary Kenyans tired of corruption, economic mismanagement, and political manipulation.

“The issue of Wantam being convinced in Central Kenya alone is a pure lie being pushed by President William Ruto and his allies.

“For instance, is Ukambani in Central Kenya? What about Western and in Gusii? Wantam is a national movement that has been accepted even in Sugoi, where Ruto comes from,” Karua stated.

In a strong criticism directed at President Ruto’s administration, Karua accused the government of excessive and irresponsible spending at a time when Kenyans are struggling to make ends meet.

She said the Kenya Kwanza regime’s misuse of taxpayers’ money shows a lack of empathy and accountability.

“The leadership of Martha Karua and PLP will be about sealing loopholes where Kenyan taxpayers’ money is being stolen and spent in a bad way. There is outright theft and bad usage of money.

“For instance, we recently saw a bottle of water that costs Ksh30 being sold at Ksh500. We must end the misuse of money,” she said.

The former Justice Minister further questioned government priorities, criticising the purchase of luxury items while hospitals lack medicine and essential services remain underfunded.

“A normal person in a family cannot go and buy suits when there is a sick person in the family.

“For instance, Ruto wants to buy two choppers at a time when there are no medicines in hospitals and the SHA is not working at all.

“Do Kenyans know that Ruto’s office consumes tea worth Ksh1 million daily? Spending money wrongly when Kenyans are in trouble is unacceptable,” Karua lamented.

Karua said her administration would introduce strict financial reforms and transparent budgeting processes to ensure that every taxpayer’s shilling is used responsibly.

She emphasised that PLP’s agenda focuses on economic equality, strengthening healthcare, and improving education.

She called on Kenyans to reject leaders who live lavishly while citizens suffer, arguing that true leadership is about service, not self-enrichment.

“Real leadership means serving the people, not living off them,” she said.

Karua’s remarks have sparked widespread debate online, with supporters praising her for speaking boldly against corruption and wastage, while others accused her of politicising state operations.
