The People’s Liberation Party Leader(PLP), Martha Karua, has condemned the attack unleashed on the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) party leader, Rigathi Gachagua’s convoy along Mombasa Road during his return to the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday night, August 21, 2025, Karua blamed the Kenya Kwanza regime for unleashing a politically motivated attack, which she claims aims at curtailing the enjoyment of civil liberties by the opposition.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible the attack on the convoy of @rigathi on his way from the JKIA today. The attacking militia unleashed their criminal acts, giving the impression that the attack was state-sanctioned, “Karua condemned.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that @WilliamsRuto regime is intent on building and maintaining a militia, parallel to and working in cahoots with sections of the police, to unleash politically motivated thuggery, aimed at curtailing the enjoyment of civil liberties by the opposition.”

Additionally, Karua stated that the opposition remains steadfast in pursuit of a better Kenya, adding that they will not succumb to intimidation.

“We must remain steadfast in our pursuit of a better Kenya even in the face of such unwarranted criminal acts . There must be no retreat, no surrender to oppression. A more comprehensive statement will follow in due course. Welcome home, our brother, “Karua said.

Gachagua’s convoy attack

This comes after the convoy led by Gachagua that was peaceful from the moment they left Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where he received a warm welcome after a 43-day US diaspora tour on Thursday, August 21, 2025, was attacked on its way to CBD along Mombasa Road.

Gachagua’s supporters retaliated to the attack by the goons, comprising young men armed with weapons and stones that had been waiting at the roundabout.

As a result, police have lobbed tear gas to disperse the crowds as others run to safety.

In a press conference on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, interim DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malalah stated that the supporters will make a peaceful procession from the country’s main airport into the Nairobi Central Business District, where Gachagua will address the public.

“Once our party leader touches down, we shall have a peaceful procession into the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) to address our supporters and the people of Kenya at various stopovers,” Malalah said.

“We have advised the National Police Service through various OCSs accordingly and given a copy of the advisory to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).”

To IPOA, you are aware that the opposition has been a major victim of police brutality across the country, with no action from your end. If it is forgotten, I invite you to recall instances of police brutality and assassination attempts on Rigathi Gachagua and his allies.” Malalah added.
