Maraga lauds Malkia Strikers for winning despite financial constraints

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has lauded Kenya’s women’s volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, following their win against Vietnam despite recent online uproar over financial constraints.
The Malkia Strikers beat Vietnam 3 scores at the ongoing World Volleyball Championships held in Thailand.
Maraga made his remarks on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, on his official X account. In his post, the former chief justice described the team as disciplined while further terming the performance as impressive.
“Our national women’s volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, put up an impressive performance to beat Vietnam 3–0 at the ongoing World Volleyball Championships in Thailand. This is no small achievement. It is the fruit of discipline, hard work, and unyielding determination,” Maraga wrote.
Maraga also lauded the Malkia Strikers coaches and the technical bench team for the team’s victory, calling for better performance on more international stages in the future.
“To the players, coaches, and technical bench: receive my heartfelt congratulations. May this victory be the beginning of even greater triumphs at the international stage where you belong,” Maraga wrote.
Meanwhile, as Kenya celebrates the 15th anniversary of the constitution, Maraga also noted the pride in the effort the Malkia strikers have shown following the victory.
“We must continue to take pride in the effort and resilience of these young women who continue to raise our flag high, often without institutionalized government support. On this Katiba Day, they have shown the world the spirit of Kenya: indomitable, courageous, focused, and relentless. We simply never give up as a country,” Maraga noted.

Sifuna blasts govt over Malkia Strikers
Notably, Malkia strikers’ win comes just days after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna criticised the government over the public uproar surrounding the team, accusing authorities of withholding their allowances.
Sifuna made his remarks on Friday, August 22, 2025, on his official X account following a video circulating online of the Malkia Strikers voicing their plea to Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya.
“Nimenyamaza tu for now vijana wa #HarambeeStars wakafunge msiseme nawaharibia. But hapa mbele lazima tutaambiana ukweli,” Sifuna wrote.
The Nairobi senator further called out Sports CS Salim Mvurya for peddling lies about securing up to Ksh70 million to pay all outstanding allowances for all national teams.
He accused the CS of lying before the Senate about settling an outstanding Ksh2 million to the team.
“CS for sports was in the Senate over a month ago, lying that he had secured Ksh70M to pay all outstanding allowances for all national teams, including Ksh2M for you Lionesses. Hajalipa hadi leo after kupiga picha nao na dummy check over 3 months ago. Nchi inatawaliwa na PR 24/7,” Sifuna wrote.
