Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has warned prefects in secondary schools against physically assaulting fellow students, saying the Ministry won’t hesitate to punish learners meting out brutality on their schoolmates.
The CS says the punishment would have “far-reaching impact” on the lives of the violent prefects.
“The law does not allow anyone to physically abuse a student,” Magoha said on Tuesday while addressing journalists in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.
The minister’s warning comes a few days after a Form Two student at Nairobi School was allegedly beaten up by prefects, resulting in him sustaining serious head injuries.
Magoha directed the management of Nairobi School and Sawagongo High School in Siaya County to send complete reports to his office next week explaining why aggressive behaviour by students was witnessed recently at the two institutions.
Magoha said the two schools should reveal — in their reports — who perpetrated the heinous acts, and what measures the leadership of the adversely mentioned schools have put in place to avert such incidents in the future.
The minister was in Nanyuki to monitor the progress of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) pilot programme.
Magoha said there will be a major stakeholders’ conference on August 16 at the KICC in Nairobi to evaluate the successes and failures of the CBC pilot programme.
The CS further revealed that before then, he will hold four pre-conferences between July 24 and July 29 to talk about the CBC progress.
