Light moment as Ruto admits mistaking Nairobi for Doha

President William Ruto has expressed excitement over the large number of Kenyans driving Qatar’s economy in various sectors.

Speaking in Doha on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the Head of State, in a light moment, admitted that he almost felt as though he was in Nairobi, Kenya, due to the huge turnout of Kenyans at his meeting.

“To you people in Qatar, I am very happy. When I landed at the airport, many people were like, ‘Habari ya Mheshimiwa.’ I also saw many Kenyans at the conference facility. I was wondering whether I was in Nairobi or I was in Qatar,” Ruto said as the crowd cheered.

Praise for Kenyans working in Qatar

Ruto praised the Kenyans working in Qatar for their discipline, hard work, and contribution to the country’s economic growth.

He said their commitment continues to strengthen Kenya’s global image and boost remittances that play a key role in the country’s development.

The head of state assured the Kenyan community in Qatar that his administration remains focused on making it easier for citizens abroad to access government services and employment support.

He noted that his government is committed to protecting Kenyans working overseas through bilateral labour agreements and strict regulation of recruitment agencies.

Earlier, Ruto had revealed that more than 600 rogue labour agencies had been deregistered for exploiting job seekers, and that the government had set up a multi-agency team to oversee the recruitment of Kenyans to work abroad.

He also announced plans to create a fund that will help Kenyans who cannot afford travel tickets to get loans and repay after securing employment overseas.

The president concluded by urging Kenyans in Qatar to stay united, work hard, and continue representing the country positively abroad.
