Kindiki mourns victims of Naivasha and chopper crash tragedies

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has expressed deep sorrow following two separate tragedies that struck the country on Thursday afternoon, August 7, 2025, claiming a total of 14 lives.

Taking to his official social media channel on Thursday night, Kindiki said the country was still coming to terms with the fatal chopper accident that claimed the lives of six people earlier in the afternoon, only to be hit by yet another devastating incident in the evening, a bus-train collision in Naivasha that left eight people dead.

He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers and sympathies to those affected by the twin tragedies.

“As the country is coming to terms with the fatal airplane accident that claimed the lives of six people early afternoon today, it is shocking to learn of the Naivasha tragedy later in the evening in which a train and a bus crashed, causing the death of eight passengers,” Kindiki mourned.

“Deep condolences, sympathies and prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims of this latest tragedy.”

Naivasha fatal accident

At least eight people have been confirmed dead and several others injured after a tragic road accident involving a bus and a train in Naivasha, Nakuru County, on Thursday afternoon, August 7, 2025.

The fatal accident occurred at a railway crossing near the Morendat Training and Conference Centre (MTCC) in the Morendat area, along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway, where the bus belonging to Kenya Pipeline Company was hit by an oncoming train while attempting to cross the tracks.

“Thursday, 7th August 2025, Naivasha… With a heavy heart, we wish to bring to your attention an accident involving a Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) staff bus and a Kenya Railway train that occurred this afternoon on the railway crossing just before our Morendat Training and Conference Centre (MTCC),” Kenya Pipeline Company Managing Director Joe Sang confirmed the incident in a statement posted on X.

“The bus was carrying staff from MTCC getting off the morning shift. We have mobilised our safety and emergency response teams, and all injured staff have been evacuated to hospitals within Naivasha for medical attention.”

Chopper crash

The crash occurred on Thursday afternoon when a light aircraft operated by AMREF Flying Doctors went down in a residential area near Mwihoko Secondary School in Utawala. Six people were confirmed dead, and at least two others sustained injuries.

The ill-fated aircraft, a Cessna Citation XLS registered as 5Y-FDM, had taken off from Wilson Airport in Nairobi at 2:14 pm. It was heading to Hargeisa, Somalia, on a medical mission. On board were two doctors and two nurses. Tragically, all four perished when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff. Two members of the public who were on the ground also lost their lives.

Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula confirmed the deaths, noting that investigations into the cause of the crash are underway.
