Kenya Power has sent a warning to customers who have not updated their prepaid token metres.

In a statement on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, the utility company indicated that users who will not have complied with the directive will not be able to load tokens, thus leaving them in the blackout.

The electricity transmitting company made it clear that the deadline for updating the token meters will be on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

“Kenya Power wishes to inform all its prepaid customers that the deadline for updating their prepaid (token) metres is 31 August 2024. All the targeted meters have now been scheduled for an update.

“All prepaid matres that will not have been updated by the set deadline will not be able to load tokens,” Kenya Power’s statement read in part.

Why update was launched

Update Token Metre Yako is an exercise targeted at all prepaid meters where a code is used to uniquely identify each prepaid meter token that is generated at the point of purchase. It ensures that the units are safe by preventing replication in the system.

The process is necessary to prevent service disruptions. It is a process that updates software in a prepaid meter to reset the software.

“The process involves updating the prepaid metre software. To update their meters, customers will key in two codes sent to them via SMS by Kenya Power in the correct sequence. The codes are 20-digit numbers that will be entered into the prepaid meters to update the meter’s software,” Kenya Power explained during the launch.

“If the update is successful, your meter will accept new electricity tokens going forward,” the company added.
