The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has officially issued guidelines on how the tendering process for the notorious Nithi Bridge will be conducted.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the authority informed all interested suppliers, contractors, consultants, and service providers to submit their bid via the Electronic Government Procurement System.

KeNHA, which is mandated with the responsibility for management, development, rehabilitation, and maintenance of national roads, has further directed Kenyans on when the tender will be uploaded in the system for the bidders to make their submission.

“As a leading Government Agency with the above mandate, KeNHA wishes to inform the public that procurement of all Goods, Works and Services for the Financial Year 2025/2026 shall be done end-to-end using the Electronic Government Procurement (e-GP) System,” KeNHA stated.

Also, KeNHA noted that the tender will be ready by Monday, August 11, 2025, on the e-GPS platform.

“In particular, the tender documents for the following two roads will be uploaded in the e-GP platform as from 11 August 2025:Realignment of Nithi Bridge Along the Makutano – Embu – Meru (A9) Road,” KeNHA said.

In addition, KeNHA also noted three other roads set to be rehabilitated as well as upgraded, the roads include Thika-Magumu road, Maralal-Morijo, and Kisima- Sura Aduru.

“Rehabilitation and Improvement of Thika-Magumu (B20) Road, Upgrading to Bituminous Standard of Maralal – Moriji and Upgrading to Bituminous Standard of Kisima-Sura Aduru,” KeNHA added.

Further, according to KeNHA, interested bidders are encouraged to keep visiting the platform from time to time to appraise themselves on any advertised procurement opportunities so as to participate.

Ruto’s promise on Nithi bridge

KeNHA’s announcement comes just hours after President William Ruto made a promise to the public that procurement of the infamous Nithi Bridge reconstruction will begin immediately.

As part of his transformation agenda, the Head of State made his remarks on Monday, August 4, 2025, while revealing that the reconstruction will cost at least Ksh 7 billion.

“The redesign is complete, and it’s solid. The bridge needs KSh 7 billion. Procurement starts tomorrow. The new design straightens the sharp curves, and construction must be completed before the next general election,” he said.

Worth noting, the bridge has been a notorious accident blackspot since its construction in 1985, and has claimed hundreds of lives over the years.
