KDF soldiers killed in IED attack along Sankuri-Kiunga route

Three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers have lost their lives after their patrol team encountered an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Sankuri-Kiunga Main Supply Route (MSR) in Lamu County.
According to a statement shared by KDF on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the soldiers were on a routine patrol when the deadly explosion hit their convoy. The area is known for being a hotspot of terror-related activities and has seen increased security operations in recent years under the multi-agency Operation Amani Boni.
Following the attack, the military confirmed that a rapid response operation was immediately launched.
“Immediately after the incident, multi-agency security teams launched operations in pursuit of perpetrators of the heinous act and have heightened the manning of routes in and out of the area to deny the enemy freedom of movement,” the statement read in part
Several soldiers who sustained injuries during the explosion were quickly evacuated to specialised military medical facilities in the region. The KDF says they are currently responding well to treatment.
However, the military expressed sorrow over the loss of three service members, describing them as brave and selfless.
“Regrettably, three gallant soldiers succumbed to their injuries. These soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Kenya. The entire KDF fraternity condoles with their families,” the statement added.
The KDF also took the opportunity to praise the efforts of the soldiers and the prompt response by the joint security teams operating in the Boni Forest region.
“Kenya Defence Forces recognises the courage demonstrated by the personnel and appreciates the swift response by multi-agency teams operating in the area,” the statement continued.
“KDF and the entire multi-agency Operation Amani Boni fraternity remain unbowed and have the resolve to ensure that sustainable peace is attained in the area of responsibility,” the KDF noted.
