Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has called for the immediate deregistration of Neno Evangelism Centre after a viral video emerged showing Pastor James Ng’ang’a slapping a congregant during a church service.

Taking to his official X account on Sunday, April 13, 2025, Kaluma urged the Registrar of Societies to take swift action, saying the church no longer serves its intended spiritual purpose.

“The Registrar of Societies should deregister this ‘church’ with immediate effect,” Kaluma urged.

He further demanded the arrest, prosecution, and jailing of Pastor Ng’ang’a, warning that failure to act could lead to more serious harm at the church.

“Ng’ang’a must be arrested, prosecuted, and jailed before worse happens at Neno Evangelism,” he added.

Kaluma further appealed to anyone who knows the victim in the video or any other congregant who has suffered abuse at the hands of the pastor to report the matter to the nearest police station or reach out to him directly for urgent help.

In addition to Kaluma, Nairobi County’s Chief Environment Officer, Geoffrey Mosiria, also condemned Pastor Ng’ang’a for the slapping incident.

In a video posted on his official X account, Mosiria strongly criticised the pastor’s actions, emphasising that churches should be places of peace, not environments where congregants are humiliated or physically assaulted.

He went on to emphasise the true purpose of the church, explaining that it is a place for people to meditate, seek comfort, and pray, often with their eyes closed, which should not be misinterpreted as sleeping.

“The guy was slapped inside the church. Even we, when we go to reinforce noise pollution in churches, don’t usually beat people. We address them respectfully because you don’t beat somebody in church,” Mosiria said.

“Church is where you find peace of mind, relax, meditate, and pray quietly with your eyes closed. Maybe he was just meditating and not sleeping.”

Viral video

In the video, filmed on Friday, April 11, 2025, Pastor Ng’ang’a is seen slapping a man who was sleeping during his kesha services and ordering him to move to the back of the church, accusing him of being disrespectful during the service.

He then turned to a worshipper seated next to the man, scolding them for not notifying him sooner.

“This Kenya has too many problems; wake up! And you, why is he sleeping here while you’re just watching? How can someone sleep right here in the front row when I’m this fired up?” he said.
