Kaluma supports Pope Leo XIV’s opposition to LGBTQ and affirmation of divine order

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has backed Pope Leo XIV’s recent remarks on family, gender, and human dignity.
The Pope, who delivered his first address to the Vatican diplomatic corps on Friday, May 16, 2025, emphasised the Catholic Church’s traditional teachings, saying that family is founded on the union between a man and a woman.
Reacting to the Pope’s speech, Kaluma aligned himself with the pontiff’s sentiments. In a statement shared via his official X account on Saturday, May 17, the legislator reinforced his stance on gender identity, asserting that all human beings are biologically male or female.
He further condemned homosexuality and the broader LGBTQ movement, describing them as contrary to what he termed as sane humankind.
Kaluma, known for his conservative views on social and moral issues, has consistently opposed LGBTQ rights in Kenya, often citing religious and cultural principles.
“Thank you, Pope Leo XIV. All human persons are created MALE or FEMALE. Homosexuality/LGBTQ perversion has no place among sane humankind. Amen,” Kaluma wrote.

Speaking at the second Pan-African Conference of Family Values (PACFV) on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Kaluma warned that the LGBTQ movement is infiltrating African societies under the guise of modern rights and freedoms.
Addressing delegates, Kaluma claimed that young Kenyan university graduates were being lured into the LGBTQ community through financial incentives.
“This LGBTQ perversion is deep into our society. They are recruiting our young university graduates into this thing. And they are paying them a small money. So when you think this is Western or in Nairobi, my friend, the person sitting next to you is being influenced by this ideology,” he stated.
Kaluma urged African leaders to stand firm in defending traditional family values, citing homosexuality, Comprehensive Sexuality Education, abortion on demand, and commercial surrogacy as modern threats.
“Let us speak out. Let’s protect the family from modern threats. African culture and values aren’t for sale,” he stated.
Pope’s stance
In his address, Pope Leo XIV stressed that the truth about human identity, being male or female, is not a social construct, but a divine gift. He warned against ideologies that he said confuse children and distort God’s original plan for humanity.
According to him, the family remains a sacred institution designed by God, meant to be a sanctuary of life and love. He said no one has the authority to redefine this foundation.
Pope Leo XIV, who is the first American-born pope and a member of the Augustinian order, also focused on global issues during his speech. He highlighted the need for peace, saying that peace must go beyond ending wars. It must also include the careful use of language and building harmonious societies through shared values.
“The truth of the human person-male and female, is not a cultural construction, but a divine gift. We must resist ideologies that confuse our children and distort God’s plan. The family, as designed by God, is the sanctuary of life and love. No one has the authority to redefine this foundation,” Pope Leo XIV stated.

Although he acknowledged the more inclusive tone adopted by his predecessor, Pope Francis, especially towards LGBTQ+ individuals, Pope Leo XIV did not support changing the Church’s core doctrine. He stopped short of endorsing a controversial 2024 Vatican document that had proposed allowing non-liturgical blessings for same-sex couples.
In line with the Church’s traditional teachings, Pope Leo XIV also spoke strongly against abortion. He reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s support for the dignity of all human life, including the unborn, the elderly, the sick, the unemployed, immigrants, and other vulnerable groups.
During the same speech, he also touched on current global conflicts, calling for peace in war-torn regions such as Ukraine and Gaza. He said building a more peaceful world will require unity among nations, multilateral diplomacy, and deeper interreligious dialogue.
