Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has once again taken a firm stand against the LGBTQ community.

Speaking at the second Pan-African Conference of Family Values (PACFV) on Wednesday, May 15, 2025, Kaluma claimed that the LGBTQ movement is infiltrating African societies under the guise of modern rights and freedoms.

Addressing delegates at the forum, Kaluma asserted that young university graduates in Kenya were being recruited into the LGBTQ community through financial incentives. He warned that what many Kenyans perceive as a foreign issue was already deeply rooted within local communities.

“This LGBTQ perversion is deep into our society. They are recruiting our young university graduates into this thing. And they are paying them a small money. So when you think this is Western or in Nairobi, my friend, the person sitting next to you is being influenced by this ideology,” Kaluma stated.

The legislator urged African leaders to take a stand and protect traditional family values. He listed what he called modern threats to African society, including homosexuality, Comprehensive Sexuality Education, abortion on demand, and commercial surrogacy.

“Let us speak out. Let’s protect the family from modern threats. African culture and values aren’t for sale,” he said.

Kaluma praised African traditions, saying that reverence for family, community, and faith in God should continue to guide the continent’s development. He called on delegates to leave the conference with a renewed sense of purpose.

“As Africa continues to assert her family values on the global stage, let us not lose sight of what defines us, and these are reverence for traditional family, our belief in community and our faith in God. These are not relics of the past, they are living principles that can propel us into a future that is morally grounded, socially secure and politically sovereign,” he added.

Relentless fight

Kaluma has long been a vocal critic of LGBTQ rights in Kenya. He has consistently supported legislation that criminalises same-sex relationships and has condemned any efforts to promote LGBTQ acceptance.

In 2023, Kaluma publicly clashed with former U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, accusing her of pushing pro-LGBTQ+ agendas in the country. The clash came after Ambassador Whitman voiced support for the LGBTQ community and affirmed the U.S. government’s commitment to fighting discrimination against sexual minorities.

Through a statement posted on her official X account, Whitman revealed she had met with LGBTQ advocates and other stakeholders to push for equal rights.

“The U.S. proudly advances efforts to protect LGBTQI+ persons from discrimination and violence and will continue to stand up for human rights and equality,” she said.

Kaluma dismissed her comments and rejected any foreign intervention on the matter.

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights talks about the rights of all human persons; men and women. Kenyans will not accept that perverted sexual orientation nonsense you’re pushing in Kenya!” Kaluma slammed.

Following the diplomatic standoff, Kaluma announced his intention to table a new bill in parliament seeking to outlaw homosexuality and its promotion in Kenya. In a letter to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Kaluma said the proposed law would bring together all existing laws on unnatural sexual acts and introduce tougher punishments.

“I intend to bring legislation to criminalise and punish homosexuality and other unnatural acts and to further criminalise the promotion of such acts,” Kaluma stated.

He proposed life imprisonment or an equivalent sentence for those convicted of engaging in or promoting homosexuality.

“The proposed law intends to further the provisions of article 45(2) of the constitution of Kenya and to protect the family. It will not only consolidate all existing laws relating to unnatural sexual acts but also increase the penalty for those convicted of engaging or promoting the acts to imprisonment for life or a commensurate sentence,” the MP stated.
