Manchester United provide latest updates on Šeško, de Ligt and Mount ahead of Hull City encounter

Manchester United returned to training at Carrington on Tuesday morning, August 18, 2026, as preparations intensified for their Premier League season opener against Hull City on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
With the new campaign just days away, attention has turned firmly towards the opening fixture, which is scheduled to kick off at 12:30 pm BST.
Michael Carrick’s squad have increased their workload following the conclusion of pre-season, with their final warm-up game coming against AC Milan in Poland on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

One of the positive developments was the return of Benjamin Šeško to group training. The Slovenia international has been sidelined since suffering an injury during United’s home victory over Liverpool on 3 May, 2026. After an encouraging first campaign with the Reds, his return to fitness will be welcomed as the club looks forward to having him available for selection again.
Matthijs de Ligt also took part in the session as he continues his rehabilitation from a back injury. The Dutch centre-back is gradually building up his fitness ahead of his return to competitive action.
Mason Mount, however, was absent from the training session after sustaining a knock during United’s encounter with Paris Saint-Germain.
Carrick confident United are prepared
Speaking to MUTV after the Milan 4-2 defeat, Carrick admitted the final performance was below expectations but stressed that the overall pre-season campaign had been encouraging.
“I think, as a whole, it’s been very good,” Carrick told MUTV’s Mark Sullivan at the end of the match.

“I think there are a lot of positives to take from it. I think a lot of the performances; the group’s grown and got stronger. So overall, I think [it’s been positive]; barring today, we’re disappointed with today. We didn’t play well today, so there’s reasons for that.
“We need to learn from [it]. We need to improve. Some of the boys are playing some of their first minutes; there are different reasons, no excuses – we just we didn’t play very well today.
“But on the whole, we’re ready for next week. I think a lot of the boys will be better for the minutes, and, as I say, we’ve done a lot of work on the training pitch. I think the performances in the games have been pretty good, so we’re still in good spirits going into next week.”
The Milan encounter also marked the return of Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford, who were introduced after the interval following their delayed return from international duty.
Bruno Fernandes, Senne Lammens, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Youri Tielemans were among those who played the entire match as Carrick continued to assess his squad before the competitive campaign began.
