Juja woman makes history after delivering 5 babies through normal delivery at Thika Level 5 Hospital

A woman from Juja, Kiambu County, has made history after successfully delivering quintuplets through normal delivery at Thika Level Five Hospital.
Mercy Kanini delivered all five babies naturally without undergoing a Caesarean section, in a rare feat that Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi said is among only five such cases recorded in Kenya’s history.
Speaking about her experience on Monday, September 14, 2026, Kanini said she initially realised that one of the babies was already beginning to come out when she arrived at the hospital.
She explained that doctors initially considered taking her to theatre before determining that she could safely deliver naturally.
“Vile nilifika hapa kuna mtoto alikuwa ametamgulia kutoka, vile nilisikia anatoka niliita daktari akaniweka labour ward akaniangalia akiprocess kuenda theatre, but after sometime wakasema naweza deliver normal,” Kanini said.
“Nilideliver watoto wote normal sikufanyiwa C-section.

Other children
Kanini said the five babies are her third children, as she already has two older children.
Father’s appeal
The children’s father, Evans Murirya Nyahanga, expressed joy at the arrival of the five babies while acknowledging the challenges that come with raising a large family.

In a statement, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi congratulated the couple and commended the medical team at Thika Level Five Hospital for their work in ensuring the safe delivery of all five babies.
