Omanyala’s sub-10 streak ends with shock 8th-place finish in Rome

Kenya’s and Africa’s fastest sprinter, Ferdinand Omanyala, failed to add to his recent Diamond League success after managing an eighth-place finish in the men’s 100 m meeting of the Rome Diamond League on Thursday, May 4, 2026.
Omanyala, straight from a record-breaking performance in Xiamen, China, where he was the sole athlete to dip under 10, could not extend the fine start to the year, competing alongside a star-studded list of elite sprinters, including Italian and former Olympic champion Marcel Jacobs and Noah Lyles of the USA.
Despite going into the race as the second fastest man in the field after the USA’s Jordan Anthony, Omanyala found the proceedings tough, finishing a distant

Lyles, the Olympic champion, won the meeting in a time of 9.88, as two other podium finishers also marked personal feats.
African champion Emmanuel Eseme finished second in a new Cameroonian record of 9.94, while 200m Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo of Botswana placed third with a season’s best of 9.95.
Reaction to Rome performances
Taking to his social media afterwards, the Kenyan confessed that it was a tough run as he conveyed gratitude to his team for their immense role in helping his preparations.

“Tough outing in Rome, 10.11. I will take the hit, but will always show up. Thanks to Team Ferdy for always making sure I show up ready,” he stated.
Other than the triumph in the Xiamen Diamond League, where he clocked 9.94 seconds on April 23, 2026, the Kenyan has generally enjoyed a blistering season in recent times with five sub-10 runs between March and May.
Past sub-10 runs
He clocked his fourth sub-10 performance of the season in Saturday’s May 16, 2026, 100m race in Shanghai.
South Africa’s Gift Leotlela stunned the star-studded field, clocking a season-best time of 9.97s in a close finish. The South African just held off a charging Omanyala, who ran 9.98 s, and Kenny Bednarek of the USA.
From Shanghai to Xiamen, Omanyala made another resurgence, reached a new peak on Saturday, May 23, 2026, as he stormed to a spectacular 100m victory at the Xiamen Diamond League, the second leg of the ongoing circuit in China
The African record holder stunned a loaded field, blazing across the finish line in an impressive 9.94 seconds to emerge as the only athlete to dip under the elusive 10-second barrier.
