The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in some parts of the country, with showers and thunderstorms expected in sections of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley as well as the Coastal region.

In its latest weather outlook issued on Thursday, June 4, 2026, the department said showers and thunderstorms are likely over a few places in the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley counties, particularly during the afternoon and night hours.

The affected counties include Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, Homa Bay, Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia and Narok.

“Rainfall is expected over a few parts in the Highland West and East of the Rift Valley and the Coast. Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of the northwestern, northeastern, southeastern lowlands and coastal counties,” Kenya Met announced.

For the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County, residents should expect partly cloudy conditions with a chance of showers over a few places tonight. The region is also expected to experience cloudy conditions in the morning before sunny intervals emerge later in the day, with chances of afternoon showers in high-ground areas.

Strong wind

In addition to rainfall, the weather department also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) in parts of the northwestern, North Eastern, southeastern lowlands and coastal regions.

“Showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places tonight. Sunny intervals expected in the morning. Showers and thunderstorms expected over few places in the afternoon.
HIGHLANDS EAST OF THE RIFT VALLEY,” the weatherman warned.

In the northwestern region, particularly Turkana County, strong southeasterly winds are expected even as sunny conditions prevail throughout the day. Similar conditions are forecast for North Eastern counties including Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Isiolo, where strong winds are also expected.

The South Eastern Lowlands, covering Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta and Kajiado counties, are expected to experience partly cloudy conditions overnight and sunny intervals during the day, with a chance of showers around the Mt Kilimanjaro region in the afternoon. Strong southerly winds are forecast over parts of Makueni and Kitui counties.

At the Coast, including Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Tana River counties, showers are expected over a few places throughout the night, morning and afternoon. The region is also likely to experience strong southerly winds across all coastal counties.
