Kalonzo eulogises Kenya’s 1st Gusii Woman MP Catherine Nyamato as visionary leader

The Wiper Patriotic Front party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, has paid tribute to the late Catherine Nyamato, Kenya’s first Gusii woman Member of Parliament (MP), hailing her as a visionary leader and a trailblazer for women’s rights.
In a heartfelt message shared after visiting the Nyamato family on Monday, August 4, 2025, Kalonzo described the late legislator as a powerful voice in Parliament, known for her passionate advocacy on matters affecting women, especially in areas of political representation, gender-based violence, and support for elderly women and single mothers.
“I visited the family of the late Hon. Catherine Nyamato to pay my respects to a visionary leader whom I was privileged to work with in Parliament,” Kalonzo said.
“Her voice was clear, loud, and influential as a strong advocate for women’s rights in the areas of representation, gender-based violence, elderly women, and single mothers.”
He praised Nyamato’s character, describing her as vibrant, humble, and wise, qualities that made many feel she was born ahead of her time.
“Nyamato’s vibrancy, humility, and wisdom led many to believe she was born ahead of her time. She left a lasting impression on me as an example of unwavering faith in God and the eternal beauty of His gifts,” he praised the late MP.
Addressing Nyamato’s children, Kalonzo offered words of comfort, saying their mother’s legacy would live on.
“To Ernest, Peter, Roselyn, Maureen and Judy, know that your mum’s name is written in the stars. She was a shining light and everlasting gift to all who knew her and knew of her. May Hon. Catherine Nyamato rest in eternal peace,” he concluded.
Death
Nyamato, who became the first woman in the greater Gusii region to be nominated to Parliament by the late President Daniel Moi, died on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
Her passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy as a fearless champion of equality and justice continues to inspire many.
In a statement on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) hailed the late Nyamato as a fearless advocate for gender equality and a mentor for women leaders.
“KEWOPA mourns the passing of former Nominated MP Hon. Catherine Nyamato, a fearless advocate for women’s rights who boldly championed gender equality, fought against FGM, and inspired generations of women leaders in Kenya. Her legacy will live on in the continued struggle for inclusive leadership and justice for all,” the statement reads.
Nyamato, who served in Parliament from 1997 to 2002, is being remembered for championing women’s rights, the empowerment of marginalised groups, and shaping Kenya’s civic landscape during a pivotal era.
