Members of Parliament on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, paid glowing tributes to their former colleagues Phoebe Asiyo and Catherine Moraa Nyamato, who died in the past few weeks.

Asiyo was the former Karachuonyo MP, while Nyamato, who became the first woman in the greater Gusii region to be nominated to Parliament by the late President Daniel Moi, died on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Led by speaker Moses Wetang’ula, the session held a sombre reflection on the legacy of the erstwhile MPs, who were hailed as trailblazers and mentors to the many legislators now serving the 13th parliament.

Eulogised

During the session, Rarieda MP Otiende Amolo also confirmed the demise of another former MP, Bob Jalang’o Nyanduga, who died on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

“Mr. Speaker, I wanted to bring to your attention that there is also a former member who actually served with you who also died. The honourable Bob Jalang’o Nyanduga, who died four days ago. And so I was requesting that, as members honour the two, you also include him in the list,” Amollo implored.

“We lost Nyanduga, who was the first MP of Rarieda. Bob served for one term. He hailed from Asembo, Rarieda, and was brother to Grace Ogot. In his time he laid the foundation where other members also served,” Amollo added.

Others who paid tributes to the departed MPs include women MPs Zam Zam Mohameed, Suba’s Milly Mabona, and Homa Bay women representative Joyce Atieno Bensuda; West Migirango MP Stephen Mogaka; and Gilgil MP Martha Wangari, among others.

In his tribute, Mogaka hailed Nyamato’s contribution to the nation, citing her campaign against FGM, low literacy among the girls, and education during her tenure as MP.

News of Asiyo’s passing was broken by her family on Thursday, July 17, 2025.

According to the family, Asiyo passed away peacefully in her sleep while in North Carolina, USA.

“With heavy hearts, the Asiyo family shares the profound loss of our cherished mother, Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo, who has peacefully passed away in North Carolina, USA. Her presence and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her,” the statement read in part.
