Kalenjin and Luo elders vow to uphold Raila Odinga’s legacy of peace, unity

Kalenjin and Luo elders from Uasin Gishu County have vowed to uphold the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s legacy of peace, unity, and reconciliation among Kenyan communities.

Speaking in Eldoret on Thursday, November 6, 2025, during their first joint press briefing after visiting Odinga’s rural home at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Siaya County, the elders underscored the importance of sustaining inter-community harmony ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The delegation, led by Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago and Governor Jonathan Bii, presented at least 80 cows to the Odinga family as a symbol of unity and shared grief following the statesman’s passing.

Luo elders in Uasin Gishu expressed gratitude to their Kalenjin counterparts for their solidarity and commitment to peaceful coexistence.

“We are deeply moved by the gesture of our Kalenjin brothers; the spirit of togetherness shown during this difficult moment must be carried forward as we build bridges among our people,” Mzee Charles Ong’io of the Luo Council of Elders said.

Kalenjin elder Alex Mursi, who led the community’s delegation, reaffirmed their dedication to promoting peace and supporting government efforts to foster unity across the country.

“Our late brother Raila Odinga championed peace and unity throughout his life. We will honour him by ensuring that the communities in Uasin Gishu continue to live as one people,” Mzee Mursi said.

The council of elders further announced plans to organise inter-community peace forums across Uasin Gishu County in the coming months to promote reconciliation and dialogue ahead of the next election cycle.

They reaffirmed their shared commitment to preserving Raila Odinga’s legacy as a statesman devoted to national cohesion and peaceful coexistence.

Kalonzo visits Raila’s home

Their remarks come after the Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, visited Raila’s home while firmly stating how Raila Odinga’s influence will continue to grow even after his death.

At the time, while speaking during his visit to Raila’s grave at Opoda Farm on Thursday, November 6, 2025, Kalonzo said the late opposition leader inspired a new generation of young Kenyans who will carry on his vision for justice and democracy.

Kalonzo described Raila as a leader whose spirit will live on through the youth, particularly those who stood up to demand change.

“Raila Odinga will be more powerful in death than when he was alive because he inspired the young Kenyans; he inspired Gen Z,” Kalonzo said.
