Kalonzo reveals armoured car saved Raila from 10 bullet hits in 2023
Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said that Raila Odinga survived a near-fatal attack in 2023 after an armoured vehicle shielded him from ten bullets.
Kalonzo made the revelation while visiting Raila Odinga’s grave at Opoda Farm on Thursday, November 6, 2025, saying the former Prime Minister narrowly escaped death during the height of protests over the high cost of living.

Kalonzo recounted that during the demonstrations, he and Raila were targeted in what he described as a deliberate attempt to kill them.
“When Kenyans were saying the cost of living was unbearable, some of us wore sufurias; we nearly got killed,” he said. “Raila and I escaped from Embakasi South. How we did it was amazing. It was like the orders given that day were to kill us, maybe kill Raila Odinga, but we escaped to Karen in Raphael Tuju’s place.”

According to Kalonzo, their escape to safety was nothing short of miraculous.
“When we got there, my brother asked me to come, and he told me, ‘I want to show you something. We counted 10 bullet attempts on my brother,” he said.
“If it were not that he has an armoured vehicle, we would have buried him in 2023. But God is gracious.”

Standing up for bad governance
Kalonzo said the events of that day strengthened his resolve to continue standing up against what he termed as bad governance.
“This is why I have come today as a comrade,” he said. “We were in the trenches. I want my brother to know when it comes to bad governance, we will continue to resist.”

Kalonzo also took a moment to defend the Odinga family against those who have insulted or mocked them.
“I want my brother lying here to know they called him names; they say ni kwa maombi, si kwa uchawi. This is not a mchawi lying here. And nobody should ever use those names again to associate with the Oginga family. I honour you today,” he said.
Kalonzo’s remarks have drawn attention to the turbulent events of 2023, when opposition leaders led street protests demanding government action on the cost of living and accountability.
