Former Mukurwe-ini Member of Parliament (MP) Kabando Wa Kabando has revisited his student activism days, narrating dramatic encounters with the regime of the late President Daniel arap Moi in the 1990s.

In a statement on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, Kabando recalled how, in 1992, students from the University of Nairobi disrupted Moi’s movements after a function at PCEA St Andrews Church.

“In 1992, from a ceremony at St Andrews Church adjacent to the University of Nairobi, we blocked President Moi on State House Road as he cut through the students’ halls of residence. Tricked, he alighted to jeers. The escort cocked guns, but no shots. Whence, Moi shifted the route to Procession Way,” he stated.

Further, he revealed that two years later, in 1994, protests flared after police killed Kenyatta University students.

Kabando and fellow activists organised demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District, targeting state offices.

“We attempted to storm Police Headquarters, Vigilante House, but it was heavily guarded. The Attorney General’s Sheria House was easier to target. I recall Millie Odhiambo’s vigour during those demos; her fearlessness and energy stood out,” Kabando recounted.

He described the protests as a defining moment of resistance against what he termed a “belligerent regime” that eventually made concessions, though minimal, in response to relentless student pressure.

Multimedia University students’ demos

His remarks come a few months after chaos erupted in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, on Monday as police used tear gas to disperse Multimedia University students who attempted to block Magadi Road, protesting their colleague’s death.

Lameck Mwangi, a second-year student, was found dead outside the institution on Sunday, March 9, 2025, in a hit-and-run accident.

Police tackled the agitated students who hurled stones and disrupted traffic flow on the road, demanding answers into Mwangi’s death.

The officers were seen lobbing tear gas canisters across the varsity’s fence from the highway to keep the students off the road.
