Kabando accuses opposition of hypocrisy during police clampdown on protesters

Former Mukurweini MP Kabando wa Kabando has spoken out, slamming not only the police response but also the opposition’s cosy relationship with the government they once vowed to oppose. Speaking on a local Radio station, on June 27, 2025, Kabando was blunt about the mishandling of the protests.
He pointed to broken promises from the authorities.
“We had a police spokesman giving assurances of providing security, but instead, in the morning we saw roads being blocked,” he noted.
For Kabando, the tear gas and roadblocks were a clear violation of the protesters’ rights. “Who contravened the law? It was obviously those who blocked the peaceful protest,” he said.
The sight of grieving families, grandmothers, siblings, and relatives, barred from commemorating their loved ones hit a nerve.
“They were blocked the whole day,” Kabando said, his frustration palpable. “We would have expected they would have been escorted, allowed to lay their flowers.”
He argued that a little compassion from the police could have calmed tensions early on, perhaps preventing the day’s escalation.

Opposition’s integrity questioned amid protests
But Kabando saved his sharpest words for Kenya’s opposition. Once fierce critics of the government, many have now joined ranks with the regime.
“Why have they joined this regime?” he demanded. “If you scrutinize clearly, a huge number of them have integrity issues, either in the present or the previous one.” His accusation cuts deep, reflecting a growing distrust among Kenyans who feel the opposition has abandoned its principles for political gain.
Kabando also turned the spotlight on the President, whom he called “the symbol of national unity” but held ultimately responsible for the crackdown. As voices like the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (KOTU) join the chorus of criticism, the protests reveal a deeper frustration with a political system that seems to have lost its moral compass.
