Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has expressed his support for Raila Odinga in his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson position, just days before the crucial election scheduled for Saturday, February 15, 2025.

Kaluma, a staunch supporter of the former Prime Minister, took to social media on Thursday, February 13, 2025, to share his sentiments. He pointed to the unexpected rainfall experienced in various East African countries as a sign of divine blessing on Odinga’s candidacy. He suggested that as the election date approaches, nature itself appears to be aligning in favour of the veteran leader.

The MP has consistently voiced his belief in Odinga’s ability to lead the African continent, recently reaffirming his confidence in a message posted earlier in the week. He highlighted Odinga’s vision, passion, and commitment to the continent’s progress, stating that he trusts African leaders to make the right decision.

In a post on February 10, 2024, Kaluma also noted the widespread support Odinga has received across Africa, particularly from women who embarked on prayers and fasting for his success. He expressed hope that these efforts would culminate in victory for Odinga.

Fierce polls

Odinga is one of the leading contenders for the esteemed AUC Chairperson position. He faces stiff competition from Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. Over the past few months, he has toured several African nations, presenting his vision to Heads of State and government leaders, many of whom have publicly endorsed his bid.

According to the African Union, the selection process will take place in two phases. The first stage, which took place on February 12, 2025, and today involved the Executive Council electing and appointing Commissioners. The second stage will see the Assembly of Heads of State and Government electing both the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson during its session on February 15-16, 2025.

The AU outlined the detailed voting procedures, emphasizing that a candidate must secure a two-thirds majority to win. Voting will proceed in rounds, with the lowest-scoring candidates being eliminated until a clear winner emerges. If no candidate attains the required threshold after the final round, the election will be suspended by the current Chairperson.
