Nairobi patron for the Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP) Irungu Nyakera has openly said that while the Rigathi Gachagua-led party is ready to receive new entrants, a thorough inspection must be done to avoid spies being planted.

Speaking to Kameme TV on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Irungu said that for leaders like Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah to be allowed to join the party, strict vetting will be necessary.

Genuine commitment

Nyakera stressed that the opposition’s agenda is to ensure a turnaround of the nation and to block President William Ruto from securing a second term.

“We in the opposition are after the turnaround of the nation; we are looking at one term, as in ensuring that the president doesn’t serve a second term.

“We need numbers, and anyone who believes in DCP is welcome to join us,” he explained.

However, he insisted that not every defector should be welcomed with open arms, noting that some politicians may attempt to infiltrate the party to destabilise it.

“But again, we must look at whether these people want to join us because they have been rejected in other places or they have converted from Saul to Paul,” Nyakera added.

Ichung’wah under spotlight

The DCP patron specifically singled out Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah, accusing him of being hostile to the Mt Kenya region in recent years.

“Like that, Kimani Ichung’wah, for the past three years, his words have been meant to fight the Mt Kenya region, so you cannot say that he has changed in one day,” he said.

Nyakera further cautioned that some of those seeking to join DCP could be covertly sent by their political rivals to spy or cause internal divisions.

“Some will also be sent as spies to destroy the opposition,” he warned.

His remarks come at a time when political realignments are taking shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Gachagua’s DCP emerging as a new power centre in the Mt Kenya region.

While defections are expected, Nyakera’s stance signals that loyalty and past conduct will be heavily scrutinised before anyone is admitted into the fold.
