The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reassured Kenyans that the country’s electoral system is secure, dismissing claims that any politician can manipulate election outcomes.

Speaking on Monday, September 8, 2025, IEBC commissioner Alutalala Mukhwana addressed concerns over alleged election manipulation, explaining that the commission has put multiple safeguards in place to ensure transparency and integrity.

“What the reality is from the perspective of IEBC, it is not practical, it is not possible for any politician to steal an election in this country,” he said.

He added that the commission is prepared to give a detailed demonstration of the electoral process, stating, “At the right time, if you allow us, we’ll come back here with our technical team to simulate how this election is conducted from the polling station all the way up to the so-called bombers.”

Technical safeguards in place

Mukhwana highlighted the critical role of technical personnel in the electoral process. He explained that election managers and communication staff are central to ensuring the system runs smoothly, and that public understanding of their work is limited.

“That’s why I come around with my elections manager, I come around with a communications manager, because these are the technical people whose voices have never been heard, and therefore Kenyans don’t actually know that even though politicians may say that, they’re in their field, let them do what they know best. But for us as IEBC, it is not possible to steal an election,” he added.

Mukhwana also noted that disputes after presidential elections are often tied to losing candidates’ rejecting the results.

He urged politicians to prioritise national unity, citing examples from other countries where leaders shake hands and acknowledge outcomes to maintain stability.

“Where there is a doubt, it is repeated, and the winner takes his win. The loser accepts it will be a second time. That will also help us have stability and peace after the elections. IEBC will be a smart guy,” he said, emphasising that cooperation among political leaders strengthens public confidence in the electoral system.
