Havi mocks Passaris after her update on Ruto’s Ethiopia’s visit

Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Nelson Havi has criticised Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris over her statement on President William Ruto’s visit to Ethiopia.

In a post shared on his X account on Monday, July 28, 2025, Havi accused Passaris of assuming the role of government and State House spokespersons, positions currently held by Isaac Mwaura and Hussein Mohamed. He suggested that Passaris was meddling in matters that are outside her mandate by issuing detailed updates on the president’s foreign engagements.

“Congratulations on your appointment to replace Isaac Mwaura and Hussein Mohamed. What two men cannot do, one woman will do” Havi said.

Remarks by Passaris

Havi’s remarks came in response to a statement by Passaris made a day earlier, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, in which she detailed President Ruto’s arrival in Addis Ababa for the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4).

“He was received by Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh. President Ruto will deliver Kenya’s national statement on our commitment to transforming food systems to drive sustainable development and strengthen climate resilience.

He will also participate in a series of high-level thematic meetings with global leaders, development partners, and private sector stakeholders.” Passaris said.

In her post, Passaris highlighted that the president had been received by Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh and was scheduled to deliver Kenya’s national statement on the country’s commitment to transforming food systems to drive sustainable development and strengthen climate resilience.

She also noted that President Ruto would participate in high-level thematic meetings and bilateral talks with global leaders, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf.

“On his visit, the President is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with several leaders, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, among others.” She added.

According to Havi such updates are typically issued by official government communication offices and not by legislators.
