Gachagua’s MP Eric Wamumbi announces presidential ambition
Mathira Member of Parliament, Eric Wamumbi, has declared that he will contest for the presidential seat in 2042.
The legislator, who is a staunch ally of the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition and critic of the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has told his competitors to keep off him, as he is aiming for a higher seat.
According to Wamumbi, he will be looking to take a stab at the country’s top seat after President William Ruto’s tenure, suggesting that Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro will then take over in 2032 and lead the country for another 10 years until 2042.
“Please, I am not looking to be president in 2027; I will vie for the presidency in 2042,” Wamumbi wrote on his Facebook account on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
“Wale mnatafuta hio kiti muachane na mimi mpigane na your competitors.”

His remarks come even as other youthful lawmakers, such as Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, continue to express their interest in vying for the country’s top seat.
But for now, the Mathira MP is focused on supporting President Ruto, who is under intense pressure and scrutiny from the United Opposition as they beef up the wantam slogans and manifestos ahead of the 2027 contest.
“Kwa sasa, William amalize yake kumi, Ndindi Nyoro afanye Kumi, alafu niingie kwa uwaja. Muachane na mimi kabisa,” the Facebook post read.
Gachagua scoffs
The DCP chief has openly warned residents of Mathira to withhold support from their current MP, Eric Wamumbi, describing him as a betrayer of the region.
Speaking in Karatina town on Saturday, September 13, 2025, Gachagua admitted that he had previously endorsed leaders who did not live up to expectations and vowed not to repeat such mistakes in the future.

“I want you all to forgive me for having made you believe back then that Ruto is a good person. But I will not repeat that mistake. Again, my people at home, I have made many mistakes because there is another MP here whom I brought to you and asked you to support,” he said.
He emphasised that moving forward, the people of Mathira will have the power to choose their own representatives, and he will no longer promote candidates on their behalf.
“I will never bring someone else again and beg you to endorse them, no. From now on, it is you who will choose,” he added.
