Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has asked the Gen Zs to initiate the removal of President William Ruto from power through the ballot.

He urged them to apply for national identity cards, register as voters, and turn out in large numbers during the next election.

Gachagua, who spoke to Kenyans living in California in the United States on Monday, August 11, 2025, said opposing the government on social media is good but not enough.

He encouraged young people to translate their online activism into practical political participation.

Push for voter registration

“I want the Gen Zs to lobby their peers via social media. You are doing a good job on social media, which is good, but not enough.

The Gen Z must take IDs, register as voters, and come out in large numbers to vote,” he said.

He explained that young people have more years ahead of them and therefore a bigger stake in the country’s future.

According to Gachagua, their active involvement in shaping policies and leadership will secure better governance for years to come.

Partnership with youth

“At stake, they have more years to live. That is why they must participate heavily in the affairs of the nation. Allowed to lead Kenya, God willing, these Gen Zs are our partners,” he told the gathering.

The former Deputy President also commended the creativity and energy shown by the youth in pushing for change online. However, he emphasised that real transformation would only happen if this enthusiasm is matched with direct engagement in the electoral process.

Gachagua is on a two-month tour of the United States, meeting Kenyans in the diaspora to discuss national issues, governance priorities, and ways to strengthen civic participation. His message to the Gen Zs, both at home and abroad, is to see themselves as key decision-makers in determining the country’s direction.
