Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to form a formidable political team ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that the opposition is determined to offer a new kind of leadership despite what he termed as growing political intimidation by the state.

His remarks come amid increasing tension between opposition figures and law enforcement, with accusations of disrupted rallies and arrests of activists and organisers.

Gachagua has urged his allies not to give up after they were once again teargassed during their rally in Gilgil, Nakuru County, on Saturday, August 2, 2025.

Speaking on Sunday, August 3, 2025, during a political engagement in Dallas, Texas, Gachagua said the opposition has faced ongoing harassment by police during their meetings, accusing the government of using security agencies to silence dissent.

“There is a deliberate attempt to frustrate and threaten our political engagements. But we are not afraid. We are forming a strong team for 2027, one rooted in truth, integrity, and the sanctity of human life,” he said.

“We are coming together to build a team that is strong, ethical, and ready to lead. Come 2027, the people will have a real choice.”

The opposition has already filed a formal complaint with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), accusing the police of brutality and politically motivated suppression. Gachagua emphasised that the opposition’s response will be through democratic means and by presenting the electorate with a credible alternative.

“As deputy president, I never allowed the stealing of public funds. And as president, if I refuse the killing of our young people, then I will have done something right. I am a Christian, a parent, and the pain of losing young lives is unbearable. The sanctity of human life is sacred. We must respect it,” Gachagua stated.

He said that the vision for 2027 departs from political lies and state-sponsored violence, instead offering leadership based on moral principles.

“Our people want honest leadership that protects life and that builds, not one that steals or kills. It is hard to be a child in Kenya right now. That must change,” Gachagua said, adding that the planned political movement will be guided by what he described as medical integrity, a term he used metaphorically to underscore honesty and healing in governance.
