Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has mourned the victims of the deadly landslides and rockfalls that struck Elgeyo Marakwet, leaving several people dead and property destroyed.

In a message of condolence on Monday, November 3, 2025, Gachagua expressed his deep sympathy to the affected families and called on the government and the multi-agency team to ensure urgent evacuations and rescue efforts to prevent more deaths.

Rigathi Gachagua said, “I extend my deepest sympathies to the people of Elgeyo Marakwet following the devastating landslides and rockfalls that occurred on Saturday and Sunday night, resulting in loss of life and property.”

“To the families who have lost their loved ones, including our young students who tragically lost their lives, my heart goes out to you. I pray for your strength and comfort during this difficult time. I also call for a swift, coordinated response and urgent evacuations to avert any further losses and intensified search efforts for those still missing. All stakeholders should spare no effort to save lives, property and provide relief to those affected,” he continued.

Governor urges residents to move to safety

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich confirmed that another landslide occurred in the Kibendo area of Keiyo North on Monday, November 3, 2025. In a post shared on his official Facebook page, the governor urged residents living along the escarpment to move to safer ground as heavy rains continued to pound the region.

“We have just experienced another landslide at Kibendo due to the torrential rains. The county disaster response team, office of the Area MP, and ambulances are already on site,” Governor Rotich said.

He further appealed to those living on unstable slopes to heed evacuation calls and not take risks.

“I urge all residents of Elgeyo Marakwet County who live on unstable slopes to move to safer grounds. I beg each one of us to listen. These are extraordinary times, and everyone must comply to save lives,” he warned.

The landslides, triggered by continuous heavy rains, have caused widespread panic and displacement in parts of Elgeyo Marakwet. Local leaders and rescue teams are working together to locate those still missing and offer emergency assistance to affected families. Gachagua’s message comes as the government intensifies its disaster response in the region to prevent further tragedies.
