Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has praised the Harambee Stars following their remarkable victory against Morocco in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) match played on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
In a statement on his X account, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP ) leader celebrated the national team’s achievement, noting that the win was not only a triumph for the players but also a proud moment for the entire country. He commended the Harambee Stars for their resilience, unity, and ability to lift the nation’s spirit through sport, adding that such victories inspire hope and patriotism among Kenyans.
“What a moment to be proud of the Harambee Stars! Congratulations, our team! Once again, you have made our great nation proud! Your win is a win for Kenya. Keep winning! Keep it, Stars! God Bless Kenya!” Gachagua stated.
Gachagua’s remarks come as Kenyans continue to celebrate the historic result, which is being hailed as one of the most memorable moments in the country’s recent football history.
Historical win
The Harambee Stars produced a spirited display to beat tournament favourites Morocco 1-0 in front of more than 40,000 fans at the fully packed stadium. The result saw Kenya secure top spot in Group A with seven points.
Ryan Ogam scored the winning goal in the 42nd minute, pouncing on a rebound after Muchiri’s shot was blocked. The strike sent the home fans into wild celebrations, but moments later, midfielder Chrispine Erambo was shown a straight red card after VAR upgraded his challenge to a dangerous tackle. It was the second time in two consecutive matches that Kenya had a player sent off.
Head coach Benni McCarthy, who had made bold changes to the starting lineup by resting captain Omar Aboud and creative midfielder Austin Odhiambo, saw his tactical plan work perfectly in the opening stages. Kenya pressed high from the first whistle, creating early chances and forcing a corner in the fifth minute.
Although Morocco dominated possession, they were unable to break down Kenya’s defence, with goalkeeper Bryne Omondi making crucial saves, including a big stop in the 35th minute to deny El Mahraoui. After taking the lead, Kenya had to reorganise following Erambo’s dismissal, switching to a compact defensive shape to cope with relentless Moroccan attacks.

The second half saw Morocco pile on the pressure, but Kenya stood firm. Muchiri thought he had won a penalty in the 55th minute, but after a VAR review, the decision was changed to a free kick, which Ogam hit into the wall.
McCarthy brought in defensive reinforcements, including Aboud and Sakari, to strengthen the backline. Central defenders Joseph Kibwage and Sylvester Owino were outstanding, winning crucial duels and making vital clearances.
Seven minutes of injury time brought nervous moments, but the Harambee Stars held their ground to seal a famous win that keeps their CHAN dream alive.
