Gabon President under house arrest as soldiers annul elections

04:30 PM

Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba is under house arrest and one of his sons has been arrested for “treason”, military officers said Wednesday, hours after announcing they had overthrown the government.

“President Ali Bongo is under house arrest, surrounded by his family and doctors,” they said in a statement read out on state TV.

A group of 12 Gabonese soldiers announced on Wednesday that the country’s borders were closed until further notice, in a statement broadcast on the Gabon 24 television channel.

“The borders are closed until further notice,” said one of the soldiers, speaking on behalf of a “Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions”.

The internet, which was out for three days, was restored Wednesday in Gabon after the army officers said they were scrapping election results that handed another term to Bongo.

A nationwide internet shutdown was imposed by Bongo’s government as polling drew to a close late Saturday on the grounds that it would prevent the spread of “false news” and possible violence.
