Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed deep sorrow following the sudden passing of former Laikipia North Member of Parliament Mathew Lempurkel.

In a heartfelt message shared on his X on Sunday, August 24, 2025, Gachagua paid tribute to the late legislator, describing him as a dedicated public servant and a valued member of the DCP. Gachagua lamented the loss as untimely and deeply painful.

“I have learnt of the untimely passing on of Hon. Mathew Lempurkel with a heavy heart. Hon. Lempurkel was a member of the Democracy for Citizens Party and a former Member of Parliament for Laikipia North,” the statement read.

The late Lempurkel, known for his vocal advocacy for pastoralist communities and marginalised groups, served as MP between 2013 and 2017.

During his tenure, he championed land rights, improved access to education, and peace initiatives in the conflict-prone Laikipia region. His leadership was both praised and controversial, often marked by passionate engagement with the issues affecting his constituents.

Gachagua extended his condolences to Lempurkel’s family, friends, and supporters, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may Almighty God grant strength, comfort, and fortitude to his family, loved ones, and all who cherished him during this moment of grief. My deepest sympathies to you all,” he said.

Lempurkel, who remained active in grassroots politics even after leaving Parliament, was viewed by many as a resilient figure who never shied away from defending the interests of his community.

The DCP leader said the death of the former legislator leaves a void in the political landscape of Laikipia and the wider pastoralist regions.

“Hon. Mathew Lempurkel has departed, but his legacy will live on in our hearts,” Gachagua writes.

Lemprukel’s death

Lempurkel passed on following a tragic road accident that occurred earlier this week in Rongai.

Lempurkel sustained serious injuries in the accident and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi. Despite efforts by medical professionals to stabilise his condition, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

Known for his vocal advocacy for the rights of the Maa community, Lempurkel served as Laikipia North MP from 2013 to 2017. During his time in office, he was a fearless and passionate defender of indigenous land rights and a staunch advocate for marginalised communities in northern Kenya.

His passing has drawn widespread mourning, with community leaders and former colleagues describing him as a bold, selfless leader who dedicated his life to public service.
