Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi has called on politicians to form authentic relationships and support each other genuinely, stressing that true friendships are hard to come by in the political space.

Speaking during her son Elvis Murakana Namenya’s burial ceremony at her home in Narok County on Saturday, March 29, 2025, Elachi shared advice with fellow leaders. She highlighted the isolating nature of politics beyond their careers.

“I am indebted forever, I have no words. I have nothing to give you, my friends. But one thing I can promise is an item of prayer, that your children will be protected especially the politicians,” Elachi said.

The legislator pointed out that politics often leaves leaders feeling isolated, with few genuine friends to lean on. She encouraged her colleagues to prioritize personal connections over political rivalry.

“I want to tell you today, as politicians you do not have any friends. Learn to love yourselves. Learn to forget politics a bit and call each other somewhere and just have a meal and talk about your children and talk about what is happening in your lives,” she advised.

“Because the only friend you have is Jesus, a friend who knows that when you wake up as a politician, you go through the same things because you are human.”

Compassion for others

Elachi’s sentiments were echoed by Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, who praised her for her compassion and selflessness. Wetang’ula urged politicians to adopt the same spirit, describing Elachi as a leader who exemplifies kindness and commitment to others.

Wetang’ula who was speaking at Elvis’s funeral recounted how Elachi and Nairobi Senator Catherine Mumma stood by his side during the loss of his mother in December 2024. According to Wetang’ula, the two leaders spent an entire night by his mother’s casket, offering comfort and remaining with the family for two more days after the burial.

“All these MPs came to console my family, but Elachi and Senator Catherine Mumma stood out. The day before the burial, I went home at 2 am, and I found them sitting near my mum’s casket. They remained there till morning. After the burial, they remained there for another two days. That is how we treat each other as human beings,” Wetang’ula recalled.

He commended Elachi’s consistent support for her colleagues, describing her as a true Kenyan politician who embraces everyone regardless of tribal or political differences.

“You are the profile of a true Kenyan politician we need—no tribalism and works with anyone, anywhere. We cherish you for that. Every parent expects to be buried by their children. But God’s work has no mistakes,” Wetang’ula noted.

Wetang’ula encouraged politicians to embrace empathy and selflessness, emphasizing that building genuine friendships would strengthen the nation’s leadership.

Elachi’s son’s death

Elvis lost his life on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, after being involved in a road accident.

The lawmaker revealed the heartbreaking details of her son’s tragic passing, stating that he sustained a severe head injury that caused his brain to dislodge, ultimately leading to his death.

“So in that, his brain now just moved and came out from its lobes and that’s what succumbed him,” she said, vividly describing the devastating incident.

He was admitted to AAR Hospital, where he spent a week in the Intensive Care Unit before succumbing to his injuries.
