Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has urged the political class to adopt a spirit of compassion and selflessness, exemplified by Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi.

Speaking during the burial of Elachi’s son, Elvis Murakana Namenya, on Saturday, March 29, 2025, in Narok County, Wetang’ula commended the MP for her kindness and unwavering support for others during their most trying moments.

He recalled learning about Elachi’s son’s tragic accident while he was away from Nairobi, yet he immediately reached out to comfort her. When he finally made it to the hospital, Wetang’ula found Elachi surrounded by a group of female legislators offering support.

“Elachi is respectful and has a kind heart. When I heard about the accident, I called her. I was out of Nairobi. When I arrived, I went straight to the hospital. I was happy to find her surrounded by female legislators, trying to support her,” he said.

Wetang’ula described Elachi as a leader who continuously shows up for others, regardless of the circumstances. He recalled her exceptional support when he lost his mother in December 2024, noting how she and Nairobi Senator Catherine Mumma spent an entire night by his mother’s casket, offering comfort until morning and staying on for two more days after the burial.

“She has been there for everybody in every situation. Advising people and sacrificing her time,” he noted.

Selflessness

Wetang’ula also praised Elachi’s inclusive approach to leadership, highlighting her ability to work with people from all walks of life without bias or discrimination. He encouraged other leaders to adopt the same spirit to build a united and compassionate nation.

“You are the profile of a true Kenyan politician we need—no tribalism and works with anyone, anywhere. We cherish you for that. Every parent expects to be buried by their children. But God’s work has no mistakes,” Wetang’ula said.

Reflecting on Kenya’s journey from a population of four million at independence to 54 million today, Wetang’ula emphasized the importance of nurturing unity and love among citizens in a rapidly growing nation. He urged leaders to abandon hateful rhetoric and focus on building a more harmonious society.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. The citizens expect so much from us leaders. In this country, we keep bringing words of hate. We want a Kenya where citizens love each other and see each other as brothers and sisters,” he concluded.

Elvis lost his life on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, after being involved in a road accident.
