EACC confirms probe into 5 sitting and 11 former governors over graft

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed it is investigating five sitting and 11 former county governors over reports of graft and abuse of office.
Speaking on Friday, August 22, 2025, the EACC Chief Executive Officer, Abdi Mohamud, stated that the inquiries are part of the agency’s broader crackdown on corruption in the counties, targeting the misuse of public funds through irregular procurement, inflated tenders, and unexplained wealth.
Ksh1.6B cases under probe
Mohamud revealed that the Commission is pursuing cases worth more than Ksh1.6 billion involving 822 county officials.
The officials are accused of irregular recruitments, manipulation of payrolls, embezzlement of car and mortgage loan funds, and questionable allowances.
“Notably, four of these cases involve current and former county governors, two former Cabinet Secretaries, a Principal Secretary, and CEOs and MDs of various state corporations,” said Mohamud.

He confirmed that 89 high-profile cases have been completed in the past eight months, with 82 already forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) with recommendations for prosecution.
Recoveries and disrupted losses
According to Mohamud, the Commission has recovered 12 properties valued at approximately Ksh600 million and over Ksh105 million in cash since January 2025.
In addition, proactive investigations have disrupted a possible loss of Ksh7.2 billion in public funds.
The commission reiterated that no official will be spared, regardless of their position or political standing. “All those found culpable will face the law,” EACC said, urging Kenyans to report corruption cases and hold leaders accountable.
Mohamud further assured the public that the agency is scaling up both preventive and enforcement efforts to ensure public resources are safeguarded.
“While the Commission acknowledges the frustration by Kenyans, I wish to assure the country that the Commission will upscale its mandate geared towards effectively combating corruption,” he said.
He also clarified that the Commission has not opened any investigations into claimed bribery in Parliament, noting that no credible complaints have been received so far.
“We have not received any complaints of bribery by MPs. If we ever receive any credible information, then we shall definitely open investigations. I know the President at his level could be having information that we don’t have as of now,” he said
