The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Chairperson Bishop David Oginde has revealed that at least nine sitting governors are under intense probe over graft.

Oginde, who spoke to one of the local TV stations on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, regretted that the investigations reflect a worrying trend in county leadership.

“We are investigating several governors, with nine currently under scrutiny at different stages of their cases involving corruption,” Oginde said.

“This is unfortunate if you consider that we have 47 counties.”

Investigations extend beyond governors

Oginde explained that the problem is not limited to county bosses. “It is not just governors; we go down to the county staff,” he said.

He gave examples of ongoing cases, noting, “In Nairobi, we have this junior official we are pursuing over Ksh500 million.” He also cited a recent case in Busia County.

“Last week we arrested six officials of Busia County over Ksh 1.4 billion,” Oginde stated.

According to him, corruption cases are “pervasive across the counties” and show that graft is not limited to top leaders but is embedded in multiple levels of county operations.

Marginalised counties hit hardest

Oginde expressed surprise at the pattern of corruption emerging from the investigations.

“I have been surprised that the counties most hit by corruption are the ones that were considered as marginalised,” he said.

He noted that such counties, which historically have received significant development attention and resources to bridge long-standing inequalities, are among the worst affected by the misuse of funds.

The EACC chairperson assured Kenyans that the commission is determined to pursue all individuals involved, regardless of rank or influence.

He emphasised that investigations are evidence-driven and aim to recover stolen public resources.

“We will not relent in our fight against corruption,” Oginde said, adding that the goal is to safeguard resources meant for development and service delivery.

Oginde urged county leaders and staff to uphold integrity and use public resources for their intended purpose.

“Our counties can only grow when every shilling is spent on what it was allocated for,” he concluded.
