CS Miano sends caution to drivers after tourists die in Nyandarua accident

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Rebecca Miano has called for heightened caution among drivers following an accident that involved tourists along the Dundori-Oljororok Road in Nyandarua County.
Miano took to her official X account dated June 10, 2025, penning heartfelt condolences to the affected families and further urging drivers to be extra careful, especially along unfamiliar roads.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident involving tourists, which occurred last evening along Dundori-Oljororok Road. My heartfelt condolences to the affected families during this difficult time. We wish the injured a quick and full recovery as I urge our drivers to be extra careful, especially along unfamiliar roads.

The crash, which occurred on the evening of June 9, 2025, claimed the lives of six tourists, and twenty-seven others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital in critical condition following the 4pm crash.
According to reports, the minibus carrying the tourists veered off the road in Gichaka area, about 41 kilometers south of Nyahururu Town.
Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdrisack Jaldesa confirmed that the bus, which was en route from Nakuru County to the scenic Nyahururu Thomson Falls in Laikipia County, lost control and plunged into a ditch.
He said that the tourists were travelling from Nakuru to Nyahururu’s Panari hotel, where they were to spend the night.
Rescue operations were hampered by the area’s rugged terrain, but emergency teams and local residents acted swiftly to pull out survivors and rush them to nearby hospitals.
Miano’s remarks have drawn attention to Kenya’s persistent road safety challenges and sparked renewed calls for action.
The incident comes at a time when Kenya’s road safety record remains under scrutiny.
As investigations into the crash continue, attention is turning to how Kenya’s tourism sector can enhance safety protocols to protect visitors.
Miano’s call for extra caution on the roads underscores the urgent need for better road safety practices and vehicle inspections, especially in areas frequented by tourists. The crash has reignited broader discussions about the country’s infrastructure gaps and the importance of proactive governance in safeguarding lives.
